Archeology Finds with the Help of Scanners
Posted by E-Biz in Technology on June 4th, 2009
Archeology is very interesting especially when new sites are discovered or new technology allows archeologists to understand artifacts and their surroundings better. In Greece currently there is one of the oldest underwater cities that archeologists are trying to preserve and map. They are using a scanning sonar to create a three dimensional model of the city. 3D scanning technology and software has enabled scientists to create life-like models of dinosaurs, artifacts and humans out of little remains. This underwater town, Pavlopetri, has been dated to around 1100 B.C. and the deprivation of oxygen has preserved many artifacts. The walls however have been worn by the many years of waves washing over them in the ocean. With systematic study and the use of portable 3D scanners new discoveries in history can be mapped and better understood. It is engrossing to hear about where and how people lived, what they did for a way of life and what happened to them. Having an entire city enveloped by the sea fascinates us and modern technology helps us know about our past.
